Ancient Japanese Technique of Jin Shin Jyutsu May Help Alleviate Anxiety -Health

Source: Author: Walt Crocker Published date: 2008-07-30
Carl was having problems with anxiety attacks. They were especially bad when he was driving. They usually struck without very much warning. It usually started with tightness in his chest and a general feeling of nervousness. Then he began to get dizzy and feel like the whole world was closing in on him. Without knowing it, his breathing became erratic and heavy. He had chest pains and he would swear that he was having a heart attack.

Cold sweat broke out on his forehead and a couple of times he actually passed out for a few seconds, not a good thing to do if you are driving down the highway at 65 miles an hour. Usually it would force him to pull over and sit with his head down between his legs for a few minutes. When he was finally able to get off of the road, the symptoms would usually go away within a few minutes. One time he had to call ahead to work and have someone come out and get him. It made him not want to get in his car and drive anymore.

Finally Carl went to see a psychologist and took some therapy. The psychologist told him to focus on other things while the attack occurred, fiddle with the radio knob, focus his attention on the road, etc. He told him to write a little note and paste it on the dashboard that said: "I can get through this." He recommended that Carl do some exercises and listen to some relaxation tapes. All of the suggestions seemed pretty simple, but after a few weeks, Carl began to experience fewer and fewer attacks. Finally, he was able to stop them before they became severe.

One of the tools that Carl used was called Jin Shin Jyutsu. JSJ is an ancient Japanese healing technique that predates acupuncture and acupressure but still uses the same principles. It works on the energy centers of the body without the use of needles. The JSJ practitioner is trained to sense where energy flow r pulses in your body are trapped and works to free that flow. The Japanese are great believers in the flow of "chi" or energy throughout the body and its relationship with health. It hasn't been medically proven, but stimulating these "nerve pathways" certainly do seem to have some kind of effect, whether it be relieving pain, anxiety, balancing our emotional system or preventing chronic fatigue.
